If you are a first time dad, knowing what to buy your newborn or unborn child can be difficult. Questions arise like, ‘Do I really need this?’ or ‘Will this really help?’ and most of the answers you find online are ‘Yes, you must buy this now!’ because if it’s worked for one parent then it must work for you.

I decided that I would create my own list, a list of things we have bought and used, that I would suggest you look into, if only to make your life that little bit easier when you have so much going on.

7. Ball Pit

This simple ball pit provides hours of endless fun. My daughter is now 8 months old and has started to crawl, meaning keeping up with her is a tedious task. A ball pit can be used as a child friendly ‘cage’ to keep your little one safe and static! Not only is it good to keep them in but they can use the outside to gain confidence to pull themselves up safely as the sides (on this one at least) are padded.

We have this sat front and centre in our living room and was something we bought before Penelope was born and now she is old enough to use it, it was worth every penny. You can see the one we purchased here.

6. Netflix

Now this is probably something you already have and something you use regularly already, but the child account that Netflix offer is a life saver. Usually at 6am when Penny wakes up but the first morning coffee has quite kicked in for us, Netflix is an amazing place to turn to.

There are a few favourites that we can go to, which Penny loves, giving us half an hour of TV binging with the occasional sideways glance to make sure her Mummy & Daddy are still there. Netflix isn’t something you will see on most lists as some parents don’t like their children watching TV. But for half an hour in the morning whilst you wake up, I’m all about that life!

5. Jumperoo

This has a similar use as the ball pit but can be used at a much younger age. Once your baby can hold their head up safely then the Jumperoo is a life saver. Not only does it give your baby confidence to stand on their own two feet, as well as strengthen the muscles safely, it also can give hours of entertainment throughout the day giving you a chance to catch up on the washing or do a spot of vacuum cleaning.

This can’t be used whilst you sit and catch up on your favourite TV programme though as it can be extremely loud, but the smile on your child’s face as then jump up and down on their own is priceless. We bought this model but there are plenty out there to choose from.

4. Amazon Echo

Another one that doesn’t make most lists but can be a must have item when it comes to your child. We have a handful of these products, big and small, dotted around the house. The one place that it is most useful is in Penny’s bedroom. From the app we can set it to play nursery rhymes which sooth Penny whilst she is falling asleep. Each baby might be different but you can get it to play white noice, ocean sounds or anything that helps your baby sleep.

We use this most nights and it really helps. Not only is it good at night, in the day we can get it to play more upbeat nursery rhymes and we can sing along, as Penny loves a dance!

3. Prep Machine

I have mentioned this is a previous post, and I still stand by my words, this is up there with the best things we have purchased so far! Whether is be in the middle of the night when you are half asleep or during the day when your child goes from happily playing to being the most hungry baby there has ever been, this will save you time and effort.

Think of it as a ‘coffee machine’ for children. It will instantly heat up your babies bottles to a drinkable temperature without the need of sitting the bottle in cold water and then pouring it all over your wrist to make sure it’s drinkable. In the night, we get Penny’s formula spooned out into her bottle ready for the morning feed, then all we have to do is tell the machine how many ounces we require and it does the rest. We bought this model but there are a few to choose from.

2. Sleepyhead

For a newborn, this is the dogs b******s. A perfect place for your baby to sleep safely and comfortably. There are other products available but the Sleepyhead was our choice. Until Penny was too big for this she used to nap in it in the day, safe from rolling, and you can easily move it to wherever is convenient for you.

1. Microwaveable Sterilising Bags

Taking the number one spot, simple because of the amount of times they have saved my ass, these sterilising bags are a definite must have! Many times I have forgotten to wash a bottle for Penny, meaning if I had to sterilise it, she would have to wait at least 15 minutes until she could have her bottle. And an unhappy hungry baby is hard work for a whole 15 minutes.

These bags give you the option to sterilise your babies bottle in the microwave within 3 minutes. They are also great to take away with you (if we can ever travel again) meaning you can sterilise on the go, without the need to take a full blown steriliser with you. These are the bags we bought, but there are plenty to choose from.

That’s it!

That was my run down of all the things I believe should be on everyone’s list when they are having a baby! If you have any of these items let us know in the comments below, or you need any help or more info, contact me!
